Kennington Park, nestled in the vibrant heart of London, stands as a beloved green space cherished by residents and visitors alike. With its lush landscapes and tranquil atmosphere, the park offers a break from the city's hustle and bustle. However, this sanctuary has faced certain challenges related to dog ownership, particularly concerning poorly trained off-leash dogs. In this article, we delve into the significance of adhering to dog-friendly etiquette when walking our furry companions in Kennington Park.

The Significance of Dog-Friendly Etiquette
Kennington Park serves as a haven of beauty and relaxation, attracting a diverse crowd seeking solace and recreation. It is crucial to acknowledge that not all park visitors may share the same enthusiasm for dogs. Therefore, it becomes our collective responsibility as dog owners to ensure that our pets do not disrupt others' enjoyment and tarnish the reputation of responsible dog owners.
Poorly Trained Off-Leash Dogs
Among the pressing concerns in Kennington Park is the presence of inadequately trained off-leash dogs. These dogs often approach park visitors, other dogs, and wildlife without restraint or consent, leading to discomfort, potential conflicts, and hazardous situations. It's important to remember that your dog's welfare depends on you, and it is your duty to keep your pet and others safe.
The park is open to everyone, including those with severe dog allergies or fears, as well as other dogs that may not appreciate unsolicited approaches. By being considerate and responsible, you not only protect your beloved companion but also ensure a safe environment for everyone. Training your pet in good manners and command response, especially in off-leash areas, is essential. Additionally, dog owners should closely monitor their pets' behaviour and intervene if their dogs display any signs of discomfort, aggression or excessive excitement. A dog-friendly park should be safe and enjoyable for all, so if you cannot control your dog's interactions, it's best to keep them on a leash.
"My Dog is Friendly" Excuse
It's not uncommon for some dog owners to allow their dogs free rein with the excuse that their dog is friendly. However, it's crucial to remember that not all dogs may share this sentiment. Before allowing your pet unrestrained freedom, consider professional training to establish recall and safe behaviour. Moreover, having an uncontrollable dog is a violation of the law, regardless of their friendliness. Even non-aggressive dogs must be under control at all times.
Rising Dog-Related Accidents
In recent years, Kennington Park has witnessed a significant increase in canine visitors. To ensure responsible dog ownership while allowing dogs to play and exercise off-leash safely, designated dog exercise areas have been established. Unfortunately, not all visitors take advantage of these designated areas, and some that do, do not promote dog etiquette, resulting in rising dog-related accidents.
Some dog owners struggle to control their dogs, putting other park-goers at risk.
Clean-Up After Your Dog
Responsible dog ownership extends to cleaning up after our pets. Neglecting to pick up after your dog not only leaves a mess but also poses health risks to fellow park users. Kennington Park provides numerous waste bins for this purpose, and it's our duty as dog owners to utilise them conscientiously.
My Experience in the Park
As a professional dog carer and certified dog trainer, I have frequently visited Kennington Park with and without dogs.
I often advise friends and customers that dog parks can be one of the most challenging environments for pets, especially in a place like Kennington Park, where irresponsible dog owners abound.
An example of one of many disturbing incidents that I have witnessed was when I was walking a small French Bulldog (on a leash) in the park. A man with two large dogs in a dog exercise area exhibited the worst dog-friendly behaviour and worst irresponsible dog ownership. He was engrossed in a phone conversation while his dog repeatedly leaped over the fence. Instead of addressing training issues or leashing his dog, he resorted to shouting, creating a chaotic and potentially dangerous situation. When asked about his dog's temperament, he admitted it wasn't friendly, all while his dog roamed uncontrollably!
Responsible dog ownership is essential to safeguarding your furry companions and the community around you.
In conclusion, Kennington Park is a cherished gem in London, and preserving its pristine beauty and peaceful ambiance requires a collective effort. To ensure that the park remains welcoming for all, dog owners must adhere to dog-friendly etiquette. By following leash regulations, training our dogs, and cleaning up after them, we can foster a harmonious environment where both dog owners and non-dog owners can coexist peacefully. Responsible dog ownership not only benefits us and our pets but also the entire community that enjoys this urban sanctuary. Together, we can ensure that Kennington Park continues to be a delightful destination for everyone.
